MAC-02B – Three Phalangites with Red Shields
Few ancient infantry formations are as instantly recognisable as the Macedonian phalanx, its ranks dominated by the extraordinary length of the sarissa.
MAC-02B provides three Phalangites with red shields, forming part of the John Jenkins Designs representation of this formidable military system.
The Macedonian phalanx was developed under Philip II of Macedon and became one of the foundations of the army inherited by his son, Alexander the Great. The sarissa was considerably longer than the traditional Greek hoplite spear and was normally wielded with both hands.
This required a smaller shield than the large hoplite aspis. The shield could be supported from the shoulder while both hands controlled the long pike.
The real strength of the formation came from depth and cohesion. Several ranks could project their sarissas forward, creating a dense barrier of points extremely difficult to approach from the front.
MAC-02B is therefore a set that becomes increasingly impressive as numbers grow. Combine several groups and the characteristic mass of the Macedonian phalanx begins to emerge.
