MAC-02C – Three Phalangites with White Shields offers an alternate shield treatment for collectors building a Macedonian pike formation.
The Macedonian phalangite was not intended to fight as an isolated warrior. His effectiveness depended upon the soldiers around him maintaining formation and keeping the forest of sarissas directed towards the enemy.
This interdependence is one reason the John Jenkins Designs multi-figure sets work particularly well for the subject. Three figures provide a glimpse of the formation; several sets arranged in depth begin to show how intimidating the phalanx could become.
The white shields also allow collectors to create a visually distinct formation or introduce variation into a much larger Macedonian army.
Place the front ranks relatively close together, with additional rows directly behind them. The repeated pikes then become as important visually as the individual figures themselves.
