MAC-03A – Three Phalangites with Coloured Shields
The coloured shields of MAC-03A immediately introduce variety into the disciplined geometry of the Macedonian phalanx.
This three-figure set represents the same heavily drilled pike infantry that formed the backbone of Macedonian armies, but the shield variation gives collectors greater freedom when organising different sections of the formation.
Phalangites carried the long sarissa, which could measure several metres in length. Because it required two hands, the soldier's shield was smaller and differently carried than that of the traditional Greek hoplite.
In close formation, the front ranks presented multiple layers of pike points towards an approaching enemy. The men farther back added weight to the formation and could replace casualties or bring their weapons forward as the unit advanced.
MAC-03A can form a colourful front or supporting rank, or be mixed selectively with the red- and white-shield versions.
Available through The Military Workshop – three John Jenkins Designs Macedonian Phalangites combining the unmistakable sarissa formation with attractive shield variation.
