MAC-03B – Three Phalangites with Red Shields

MAC-03B – Three Phalangites with Red Shields is designed to add another layer to the massed Macedonian pike formation.

Alexander's famous victories were achieved by a combined-arms army, not by the phalanx acting alone. At battles such as Issus in 333 BC and Gaugamela in 331 BC, the phalanx provided a powerful infantry centre while cavalry and other formations played crucial roles in the wider battle.

This distinction makes the phalangites particularly interesting to display. They should look like the solid centre of the army – dense, organised and difficult to penetrate from the front.

The red shields give MAC-03B a strong visual identity when several sets are placed together. Arrange the figures behind another rank and the overlapping sarissas begin to create the depth characteristic of the formation.

Cavalry placed on the flanks can then show the broader tactical system within which the phalanx operated.

Available from The Military Workshop – a three-piece John Jenkins Designs red-shield Phalangite set for expanding the powerful infantry centre of a Macedonian army.
