MAC-04A – Three Phalangites with Coloured Shields
MAC-04A adds three more coloured-shield Phalangites, allowing the Macedonian battle line to grow while maintaining variation among its individual soldiers.
Philip II's military reforms helped turn Macedonia from a kingdom vulnerable to its neighbours into the dominant power in Greece. The phalanx was an important part of that transformation, but so too were improved cavalry, siegecraft, organisation and professional training.
The phalangites themselves carried relatively modest personal equipment compared with some heavily armoured Greek hoplites. Their real protection lay partly in the collective formation and the barrier created by the sarissas.
The coloured shields of MAC-04A work particularly well when used selectively among larger blocks of red or white shields, breaking up the uniformity without undermining the overall appearance of disciplined infantry.
