MAC-05A – Three Phalangites with Coloured Shields
The Macedonian phalanx was designed around collective strength, and MAC-05A provides another three Phalangites with coloured shields for expanding that collective formation.
The coloured shields are particularly effective in a mixed unit, introducing small visual differences without taking attention away from the defining feature of the troops – their exceptionally long sarissas.
During Alexander's campaigns, the phalanx fought in environments ranging from the Balkans and Asia Minor to Mesopotamia and beyond. Its effectiveness depended upon maintaining formation while operating as part of a larger army containing cavalry, hypaspists, archers and other specialist troops.
MAC-05A can be used to add another rank or fill gaps between existing groups. Slight variations in the figures help a large unit feel populated by individuals while still retaining the disciplined character of Macedonian infantry.
