The true visual power of the Macedonian phalanx only becomes apparent when its soldiers are assembled in depth. MAC-07N2 – Nine Phalangites provides exactly the numbers needed to create that impression.
Under Philip II of Macedon, the Macedonian infantry was transformed into a highly trained force centred upon the long sarissa, a pike considerably longer than the traditional spear of the Greek hoplite. His son, Alexander the Great, inherited this military system and used it during his extraordinary campaigns against the Persian Empire.
The phalanx was most formidable when its formation remained intact. Several ranks could project their sarissas towards the enemy, creating a dense barrier of spear points while the men behind added depth and pressure to the formation. It was a system built upon discipline and collective action rather than individual swordsmanship.
Nine figures allow collectors to reproduce this principle far more convincingly than a single line of infantry. Arrange MAC-07N2 in several ranks and combine it with the MAC-02 through MAC-07 three-man sets to extend the formation in both width and depth.
Add Hypaspists towards the vulnerable edges of the phalanx and Macedonian cavalry farther out on the flanks and the display begins to show the combined-arms system that made Alexander's army so effective.
