MAC-21 – Thessalian Cavalry | John Jenkins Designs
The Thessalian Cavalry were among the most highly regarded mounted troops serving in the army of Alexander the Great, forming an important part of the military forces that conquered the Persian Empire.
Recruited largely from the aristocracy of Thessaly, these horsemen were considered among the finest cavalry soldiers in the Greek world. Their skill in horsemanship and their distinctive battlefield formations made them valuable allies of the Macedonian kings.
Unlike the Macedonian Companion Cavalry, which was generally associated with the army's decisive offensive attacks, the Thessalians were frequently entrusted with the defence of the left flank, where they were commanded by the experienced general Parmenio.
One of their most distinctive features was the traditional Thessalian cloak, recognised by two hanging points at the front and rear. When riding at speed, these sections streamed behind the horsemen, earning the garment the nickname Thessalian Wings.
MAC-21 – Thessalian Cavalry by John Jenkins Designs represents a mounted warrior from this celebrated cavalry formation.
The figure belongs to the Armies and Enemies of Ancient Greece and Macedonia collection and is designed to complement the other Thessalian horsemen serving under Parmenio.
An excellent addition to a Macedonian battlefield display, particularly one depicting the campaigns of Alexander the Great against the Persian Empire.
