MAC-22 – Thessalian Cavalry | John Jenkins Designs
During the great military campaigns of Alexander the Great, the Thessalian Cavalry played a significant role in supporting the advancing Macedonian army.
The Thessalians were renowned for their horsemanship and their ability to manoeuvre in formation, particularly through their use of the distinctive rhomboid cavalry formation.
According to the historical background provided by John Jenkins Designs, this formation was associated with Jason of Pherae, the leader of the Thessalian League, and enabled mounted troops to change direction rapidly while maintaining their cohesion.
Such manoeuvrability became especially important when confronting the cavalry forces of the Achaemenid Persian Empire.
At the Battle of Issus in 333 BC, the Thessalian horsemen successfully resisted a powerful Persian cavalry attack, demonstrating their ability to withstand superior numbers.
MAC-22 – Thessalian Cavalry by John Jenkins Designs depicts a mounted Thessalian cavalryman, representing one of the experienced horsemen who served on the Macedonian army's left flank.
The figure complements the other Thessalian Cavalry releases, allowing collectors to recreate the mounted formations that accompanied Alexander's campaigns across Asia.
Part of the John Jenkins Designs Armies and Enemies of Ancient Greece and Macedonia range, this miniature adds another member to the Thessalian cavalry contingent.
