MAC-23 – Thessalian Cavalry | John Jenkins Designs

The army of Alexander the Great combined several different military formations, each with a particular role on the battlefield.

While the famous Macedonian phalanx provided the strength of the infantry line and the Companion Cavalry delivered powerful offensive attacks, the Thessalian Cavalry frequently protected the army's vulnerable left flank.

Their battlefield role was especially important during the campaigns against the Persian Empire, when Macedonian forces faced large numbers of enemy cavalry.

The Thessalians were known for their use of the rhomboid formation, which allowed mounted squadrons to manoeuvre rapidly while retaining their organisation.

At the Battle of Gaugamela in 331 BC, the Thessalian horsemen under Parmenio faced determined opposition from Persian cavalry forces, helping to protect the Macedonian army while Alexander launched his decisive attack elsewhere on the battlefield.

MAC-23 – Thessalian Cavalry by John Jenkins Designs represents a mounted soldier from these distinguished cavalry formations.

Part of the Armies and Enemies of Ancient Greece and Macedonia collection, this figure can be combined with the other Thessalian Cavalry releases to create a larger mounted contingent.

An excellent addition to a display depicting the campaigns of Alexander the Great.
