MAC-31A – Macedonian Hypaspist
Between the dense Macedonian phalanx and the fast-moving Companion cavalry stood troops capable of operating with greater flexibility – the elite Hypaspists.
MAC-31A – Macedonian Hypaspist represents one of these important infantrymen from Alexander's army.
The precise organisation and equipment of the Hypaspists remain subjects of historical discussion, but they are generally understood as elite infantry closely associated with the Macedonian king and capable of performing duties requiring more mobility than the main sarissa phalanx.
This made them particularly valuable in Alexander's combined-arms system. The phalanx was extremely powerful from the front but less flexible when disrupted or forced to operate across difficult terrain. More mobile infantry could help connect it with the cavalry and protect areas where a rigid pike formation was less suitable.
MAC-31A is therefore ideally placed towards the edge of a block of Phalangites rather than simply lost within its centre. Several Hypaspists can form a transition between the massed pikes and the cavalry beyond.
For collectors recreating Alexander's army in greater historical depth, these elite infantry are an important addition.
