MAC-31B – Macedonian Hypaspist
MAC-31B adds a second Macedonian Hypaspist variation, allowing collectors to begin forming a distinct body of elite infantry alongside the main phalanx.
Alexander repeatedly employed his best troops where mobility and reliability were essential. Hypaspists appear in accounts of major battles, difficult marches, assaults and operations where the more cumbersome mass of the sarissa phalanx was not always appropriate.
Their presence illustrates an important point about the Macedonian army: its success cannot be explained by one weapon or one troop type. Phalangites, Hypaspists, cavalry, missile troops and specialist units worked together.
MAC-31B can be paired with MAC-31A or mixed among the later Hypaspist releases. Positioning them on the flank of the phalanx gives the figures a clear tactical purpose within the display.
They are also particularly suitable for rougher terrain, gateways or close-quarter scenes where tightly packed sarissas would be difficult to manoeuvre.
The Military Workshop is pleased to offer MAC-31B as another excellent John Jenkins Designs addition to the elite infantry supporting Alexander's Macedonian battle line.
