MAC-32A – Macedonian Hypaspist | John Jenkins Designs
The Macedonian Hypaspists formed an elite infantry unit within the army of Alexander the Great, performing an essential role in the battlefield tactics developed by his father, Philip II of Macedon.
The Macedonian phalanx was equipped with the formidable sarissa, a long pike measuring more than 18 feet. These weapons allowed tightly packed infantry formations to present a virtually impenetrable wall of spear points towards an approaching enemy.
However, the phalanx was less effective when required to change direction rapidly or defend itself against attacks from the sides.
To overcome this weakness, the Hypaspists were positioned on the vulnerable flanks of the phalanx, providing protection against enemy infantry and cavalry attempting to attack the formation from the side.
Unlike the phalangites, these soldiers carried hoplite-style shields and spears, allowing them to manoeuvre more freely.
MAC-32A – Macedonian Hypaspist by John Jenkins Designs represents one of these elite infantrymen serving within Alexander's army.
Part of the Armies and Enemies of Ancient Greece and Macedonia collection, this figure can be positioned alongside the Macedonian phalangites to recreate the important supporting role of the Hypaspists.
