MAC-32A – Macedonian Hypaspist
A phalanx several ranks deep is an impressive sight, but its very strength – its tightly coordinated formation – could also create vulnerabilities. MAC-32A – Macedonian Hypaspist represents the sort of elite infantry capable of operating where greater flexibility was required.
The Hypaspists served closely with Alexander and were frequently entrusted with demanding battlefield and campaign duties. Their status placed them among the more prestigious infantry formations of the Macedonian army.
During Alexander's campaigns, troops had to fight in conditions ranging from conventional pitched battles to sieges, river crossings and operations through mountainous terrain. No single infantry formation could be ideal for every situation.
That makes the Hypaspist particularly useful in a miniature army. Place MAC-32A beside the end of the phalanx, around Alexander's command or within a group moving across terrain unsuitable for tightly packed pikemen.
Combined with MAC-31A and MAC-31B, the figure helps create a recognisable elite infantry contingent rather than another extension of the sarissa ranks.
