MAC-35B – Macedonian Hypaspist | John Jenkins Designs
During the military campaigns of Alexander the Great, the Macedonian army employed a carefully coordinated system of infantry and cavalry formations.
At the centre of this system stood the Macedonian phalanx, whose soldiers carried the exceptionally long sarissa pike.
While almost impossible to penetrate directly from the front, the phalanx was vulnerable to attacks against its flanks because its tightly packed infantrymen could not easily turn or reposition their weapons.
The Hypaspists, an elite formation equipped with traditional hoplite-style weapons, were assigned the responsibility of protecting these vulnerable positions.
Their greater manoeuvrability allowed them to respond to battlefield threats more readily than the heavily armed phalangites.
MAC-35B – Macedonian Hypaspist by John Jenkins Designs depicts a member of this elite Macedonian infantry formation.
This variation features a distinctive bronze shield decorated with black markings, distinguishing it from the other Hypaspist figures in the collection.
The figure is designed to complement the other Macedonian Hypaspists, allowing collectors to build a varied formation protecting the flanks of Alexander's phalanx.
Part of the John Jenkins Designs Armies and Enemies of Ancient Greece and Macedonia collection.
