MAC-36A – Macedonian Hypaspist | John Jenkins Designs

The military successes of Alexander the Great were made possible by the coordinated use of several different types of soldiers, each performing a specialised battlefield role.

The famous Macedonian phalanx formed the centre of the army, with soldiers carrying long sarissa pikes that created a formidable barrier against attacking infantry.

However, the closely packed phalanx was vulnerable to attacks against its flanks and required additional troops capable of manoeuvring more freely.

This important responsibility fell to the Hypaspists, an elite infantry formation equipped with hoplite-style shields and spears.

Their presence allowed the phalanx to maintain its defensive strength while protecting against enemy attempts to attack from the sides.

MAC-36A – Macedonian Hypaspist by John Jenkins Designs depicts a warrior from this important elite infantry formation.

The figure features a bronze shield decorated with a distinctive white star, adding further variety to the Hypaspist figures in the collection.

Designed to complement other Macedonian infantrymen, this figure is particularly effective when displayed alongside the phalangites and other Hypaspists.

Part of the John Jenkins Designs Armies and Enemies of Ancient Greece and Macedonia range.
