MAC-36N – Macedonian Hypaspists | John Jenkins Designs

The Macedonian Hypaspists were an elite infantry formation whose role was essential to the military success of Alexander the Great.

Operating alongside the famous Macedonian phalanx, these soldiers protected the vulnerable flanks of the tightly packed infantry formations.

The phalangites carried the exceptionally long sarissa, which provided tremendous defensive strength against attacks from the front but limited the soldiers' ability to respond rapidly to threats from other directions.

The Hypaspists, equipped with hoplite-style shields and spears, were able to manoeuvre more freely, helping to prevent enemy forces from exploiting the weaknesses of the phalanx.

Their role was particularly important to the Macedonian system of hammer-and-anvil tactics, in which the phalanx held opposing forces in place while the cavalry launched decisive attacks.

MAC-36N – Macedonian Hypaspists by John Jenkins Designs is a two-figure set, combining the two different shield variations of MAC-36A and MAC-36B.

The set includes warriors with bronze shields displaying white and yellow star decorations, providing an attractive contrast within a larger Macedonian formation.

These figures complement the other Hypaspists and phalangites in the John Jenkins Designs Armies and Enemies of Ancient Greece and Macedonia collection.
