MACSS-01 – Nicanor, Son of Parmenio | John Jenkins Designs

The Argyraspides, or Silver Shields, were an elite formation of Macedonian soldiers who served in the army of Alexander the Great.

Originally known as the Hypaspists, these carefully selected soldiers were held in particularly high regard by Alexander. They later became known as the Argyraspides during the Macedonian campaigns in India, a name reflecting their distinctive silver-plated shields.

One of their most important commanders was Nicanor, son of Parmenio, a distinguished Macedonian officer who served throughout several of Alexander's greatest military campaigns.

Nicanor is first recorded during Alexander's expedition against the Getae in 335 BC, when he commanded the Macedonian phalanx during the crossing of the Danube.

During the subsequent invasion of the Persian Empire, he commanded the elite Hypaspists, serving at the great battles of Granicus, Issus and Gaugamela.

Nicanor also accompanied Alexander during his rapid pursuit of King Darius III in 330 BC, but died from disease during the Macedonian advance into Bactria.

MACSS-01 – Nicanor, Son of Parmenio by John Jenkins Designs depicts this important Macedonian commander, representing the leadership of the elite Silver Shields.

Part of the Armies and Enemies of Ancient Greece and Macedonia collection, this figure is an excellent addition to a display featuring Alexander's elite infantry formations.
