MACSS-02B – Argyraspides (Silver Shields) | John Jenkins Designs

The Silver Shields, or Argyraspides, were an elite formation within the Macedonian army whose origins can be traced to the famous Hypaspists of Alexander the Great.

These selected infantrymen played an essential role in Macedonian battlefield tactics, operating alongside the heavily armed phalanx and providing protection for its vulnerable flanks.

The Macedonian phalanx, equipped with the formidable sarissa, was exceptionally effective against enemies attacking from the front. However, its tightly packed formation limited its ability to manoeuvre rapidly.

The more flexible Hypaspists and later Argyraspides helped overcome this weakness, contributing to the effectiveness of Alexander's combined infantry and cavalry tactics.

The Argyraspides became particularly distinguished during the Macedonian campaigns in India, when the unit adopted the name associated with its silver-plated shields.

MACSS-02B – Argyraspides by John Jenkins Designs features two elite Macedonian infantrymen, wearing white armour with red detailing.

Both warriors carry the distinctive silver shields and spears associated with this famous formation.

The figures are depicted in complementary fighting positions, making them particularly suitable for combining with MACSS-02A and the commander Nicanor (MACSS-01).
