Grenadiers traditionally represented some of the strongest and most experienced soldiers within an 18th-century regiment, and consolidated grenadier companies frequently formed part of elite assault forces.

At Bunker Hill, British grenadier and light infantry companies were heavily engaged during the repeated attacks on the American positions. Their battlefield reputation did not spare them from the devastating musket fire delivered by the defenders.
