MBHL-22 - British Marine Drummer | John Jenkins Designs

This figure depicts a British Marine drummer during the Battle of Bunker Hill, fought on 17 June 1775 during the opening stages of the American War of Independence.

The British Marines served as part of the Royal Navy's military establishment, with personnel trained for shipboard duties, amphibious landings and fighting ashore.

Marine detachments stationed around Boston were assembled into battalions for operations against the American colonial forces.

At Breed's Hill, the 1st and 2nd Marine Battalions participated in the British assault against the American earthwork fortifications.

The defenders, commanded by Colonel William Prescott, successfully repulsed two major assaults before British troops eventually captured the redoubt during the third attack.

Despite achieving their objective, the British suffered substantial casualties, including a number of officers.

Drummers were an essential feature of eighteenth-century military units. Their instruments were used to communicate recognised signals and assist with maintaining the movements and organisation of soldiers during military operations.

MBHL-22 provides an additional musician for a British Marine formation, offering collectors the opportunity to include supporting personnel alongside the fighting troops.

It can be displayed with MBHL-23 and other figures representing the British Marine battalions at Breed's Hill.
