The armies of the Roman Republic are remembered primarily for their disciplined infantry formations, yet cavalry provided an important element of flexibility on the battlefield.

During the Mid Republican period, Roman cavalrymen served alongside the legions, carrying out reconnaissance, screening advances and protecting the flanks of infantry formations.

Mounted soldiers were traditionally recruited from the wealthier classes of Roman society, as horses and cavalry equipment represented a considerable expense.

Their battlefield weapons included spears and swords, while shields offered protection against enemy attacks. Without the assistance of stirrups, cavalrymen relied upon their riding ability and the design of their saddles when fighting from horseback.

The importance of cavalry became especially clear during the Punic Wars, when Rome confronted the powerful mounted forces of Carthage and its allies.
