MRRCAV-06R – Roman Cavalry with Red Shield | John Jenkins Designs

During the expansion of the Roman Republic, cavalry became an increasingly important part of Roman military operations.

The infantry-centred Roman legion relied upon mounted soldiers to perform duties that required greater speed and manoeuvrability, including scouting, escorting military columns, protecting the army's flanks and pursuing retreating enemies.

Republican Roman cavalrymen were generally drawn from citizens wealthy enough to provide their own horses and equipment. Mounted combat demanded considerable training, especially as stirrups were not yet in use.

The Punic Wars demonstrated the importance of effective cavalry, particularly when Roman armies faced the experienced Numidian and Carthaginian horsemen serving under Hannibal.

Roman commanders increasingly recognised that the success of an army depended upon combining infantry discipline with effective mounted support.

MRRCAV-06R – Roman Cavalry by John Jenkins Designs depicts a mounted Republican Roman cavalryman carrying a red shield and holding his spear to thrust towards the left.

Part of The Roman Army of the Mid Republic collection, the figure is ideally suited to displays featuring Roman cavalry engagements during the Punic Wars.
