MRRCAV-06Y – Roman Cavalry with Yellow Shield | John Jenkins Designs
The Roman cavalry of the Mid Republic formed an important supporting arm of the legion, supplying speed and mobility to an army whose principal strength lay in its heavily armed infantry.
Mounted soldiers were responsible for reconnaissance, protecting the army's flanks, screening troop movements and pursuing enemy forces after battle.
During the Punic Wars, Roman cavalry encountered some of the most effective horsemen of the ancient Mediterranean world, including the Numidian cavalry employed by Carthage.
Their equipment included protective armour, a shield, spear and sword. Roman cavalrymen fought without stirrups, relying upon well-developed riding skills and the support of their saddles.
Although Roman cavalry sometimes struggled against Hannibal's experienced mounted troops, it remained an important component of the Republic's military forces.
MRRCAV-06Y – Roman Cavalry by John Jenkins Designs depicts a mounted soldier carrying a yellow shield and holding his spear towards the left in a thrusting position.
Part of The Roman Army of the Mid Republic series, this figure is an excellent addition to a Republican Roman cavalry formation.
