A “Norman Knight” refers to a mounted warrior from Normandy during the High Middle Ages, most famously associated with the forces that took part in the Norman Conquest of England under William the Conqueror.

Norman knights were part of a feudal military system in which land ownership and noble status were tied directly to military service. Knights were heavily armoured cavalry who formed the elite striking force of Norman armies.

In battle, a Norman knight typically fought on horseback, using the momentum of a charge to break enemy lines. Their primary weapons included a lance for the initial impact, followed by a sword, mace, or axe for close combat once formations were disrupted.

Defensive equipment evolved over time but commonly included a mail hauberk (chainmail shirt), a conical helmet with nasal guard, a kite-shaped shield designed to protect the rider and horse, and padded garments worn underneath for comfort and shock absorption.

Norman military success relied heavily on the coordination of cavalry, infantry, and archers. Knights often charged in tightly organised groups, using disciplined formations rather than individual heroics. This combination of mobility and heavy armour made them highly effective against less organised infantry forces.

The most famous example of Norman knight warfare is the Battle of Hastings in 1066, where cavalry charges played a decisive role in defeating Anglo-Saxon forces led by Harold Godwinson. This battle marked the beginning of Norman rule in England and significant changes in English society, governance, and land ownership.

Outside England, Norman knights were also active in southern Italy, Sicily, and parts of the Levant during the Crusades, where they adapted their tactics to different terrains and enemies while maintaining their core cavalry-based combat style.
