NM-31A – Norman Archer

The Anglo-Saxon shield wall was a formidable defensive formation. Closely packed warriors presented an overlapping barrier of shields, making a direct assault difficult and costly. Archers therefore offered William an important means of applying pressure before his infantry and cavalry closed with the enemy.

NM-31A – Norman Archer depicts one of the bowmen who provided this vital missile support. Lightly equipped compared with heavily armed infantry, an archer relied on mobility and distance rather than close-quarter protection.
