PMRR-01R – Centurion & Signifer | John Jenkins Designs
The strength of the Roman army lay not simply in weapons and numbers, but in discipline, leadership and organisation.
PMRR-01R – Centurion & Signifer brings together two figures who symbolised those qualities – the centurion, responsible for command and discipline, and the signifer, entrusted with carrying the unit’s standard.
During the Middle Republic, Roman armies fought some of the most important wars in the city’s history, including struggles against the Samnites, Pyrrhus of Epirus and eventually Carthage. This was the era in which Rome developed from a major Italian power into a dominant Mediterranean state.
The standard carried by the signifer was more than decoration. In battle it provided a visible rallying point, while the centurion represented the authority needed to keep men together when formations were under pressure.
Placed at the centre of a larger body of Principes or other infantry, PMRR-01R immediately gives the surrounding soldiers a clearer sense of structure and command.
Available from The Military Workshop – a superb John Jenkins Designs command pairing for collectors building the armies that carried Rome through the great wars of the Mid Republic.
