The Principes formed one of the most important elements of the Roman manipular legion, standing behind the younger Hastati and providing a second line of experienced heavy infantry.

PMRR-04RYN – Principes adds another variation to this experienced body of Republican troops. During the Middle Republic, Roman armies were repeatedly tested in wars across Italy and the wider Mediterranean, and their ability to organise infantry in successive supporting lines became one of the strengths of the Roman system.

If the Hastati were unable to break the enemy, the Principes could take up the fighting rather than forcing the entire army to commit itself at once. Behind them stood the veteran Triarii, giving the Roman line considerable depth.

For collectors, PMRR-04RYN offers another pose with which to vary a larger formation. Mixed among the other Principes releases, it helps prevent the second line from appearing overly uniform.
