The Principes formed the second main line of the manipular legion. Positioned behind the Hastati, they could be called forward if the younger troops were unable to decide the fight.

This layered arrangement gave Republican Roman armies considerable staying power and allowed fresh soldiers to be introduced as a battle developed.

With four figures included, PMRR-05R is ideal for forming the beginnings of a substantial red-shield unit. Add other Principes poses, standards and command figures and the second line can quickly take on the appearance of a complete battlefield formation.
