POW-01 – Opchanacanough represents the Powhatan leader more commonly rendered in modern histories as Opechancanough, one of the most important Indigenous figures in the early history of English Virginia.
Opechancanough was a prominent leader within the Powhatan political world and became a determined opponent of the expanding English settlements after the establishment of Jamestown in 1607.
He is particularly associated with the coordinated Powhatan attacks of 1622, which struck English settlements across Virginia, and with another major uprising in 1644.
His story belongs to a period of dramatic cultural confrontation, territorial expansion and conflict between the Powhatan peoples and the rapidly growing English colonial presence.
