The Mohawk were one of the nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, and their communities occupied strategically important areas of northeastern North America.

During the wars of the 18th century, individual Mohawk people and communities made political and military choices shaped by their own alliances and interests. Their knowledge of the region made Indigenous scouts and guides important participants in frontier operations.

REF-04 works particularly well at the head of a refugee or military column, where the figure can give the impression of guiding others through unfamiliar country.
