Despite his name, Little John is traditionally portrayed as a large and formidable fighter and Robin Hood's loyal companion.

One of the most famous stories tells of Robin and Little John meeting while attempting to cross a narrow bridge. Their disagreement develops into a contest with quarterstaffs, which Robin ultimately loses before the two become friends.
