The Primus Pilus (or Primipilus) was the most senior centurion in a Roman legion. He commanded the first century of the first cohort, the elite leading unit of the legion, and served as a key adviser to the legion’s commanding officer, the Legatus Legionis.

Unlike ordinary centurions, the Primus Pilus was typically a veteran with decades of experience. His position carried enormous prestige, and he was responsible for one of the most important fighting formations in the legion. The first cohort was larger and more prestigious than the others, making the Primus Pilus one of the most influential professional soldiers in Rome’s military system.
