ROM157B – Roman Legionary with Pony (Black Shield) | Thomas Gunn

Throughout the expansion of the Roman Empire, Roman legions travelled enormous distances, marching across mountains, forests, deserts and the developing network of Roman military roads.

A Roman soldier was expected to carry much of his own equipment, including weapons, personal belongings and provisions.

The distinctive furca, a wooden carrying pole, allowed legionaries to transport their equipment while marching. Pack animals provided additional support by carrying supplies that would otherwise place a considerable burden upon the soldiers.

One of Rome's historically significant formations was Legio IX Hispana (the 9th Legion), which served in several campaigns and became particularly associated with Roman operations in Britain.

ROM157B – Roman Legionary with Pony (Black Shield) by Thomas Gunn depicts a Roman legionary leading a fully laden pack pony while carrying his personal equipment upon a furca.

This B version features the distinctive black shield of the 9th Legion, making it particularly suitable for collectors recreating this famous Roman military formation.

The figure and pony provide an interesting representation of the logistical support that enabled Roman armies to undertake lengthy campaigns.

Ideal for Roman marching columns, military encampments and supply scenes.
