ROM157C – Roman Legionary with Pony (Green Shield) | Thomas Gunn

The military success of the Roman Empire depended upon an exceptionally organised army capable of moving large numbers of soldiers and their equipment across vast distances.

Roman legionaries were famous for their demanding marches, often carrying considerable quantities of personal equipment, weapons and provisions.

Their marching equipment included the furca, a wooden carrying pole used to transport personal belongings and essential supplies. Pack animals also played an important role in supporting Roman military movements, transporting the heavier equipment required during long campaigns.

Among Rome's famous military formations was Legio XIX (the 19th Legion), one of the three legions destroyed during the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in AD 9.

ROM157C – Roman Legionary with Pony (Green Shield) by Thomas Gunn depicts a Roman soldier leading a heavily laden pack pony while carrying his personal equipment upon a furca.

This C version features the distinctive green shield of the 19th Legion, identifying it with one of Rome's historically significant military formations.

The miniature offers an excellent opportunity to recreate a Roman army on the march, a military supply column or the daily activities surrounding a legionary encampment.
