ROM195 – Roman Centurion with Vine Stick | Thomas Gunn

The Roman Centurion was one of the most important figures within the Roman Army, responsible for maintaining discipline, training soldiers and leading infantrymen during battle.

Centurions formed the backbone of the Roman legion's command structure, generally commanding a century of approximately 80 soldiers, although numbers varied throughout Roman history.

Unlike senior officers who often came from Rome's aristocratic families, many centurions rose through the ranks, gaining their positions through military experience and service.

One of the most recognisable symbols of a centurion's authority was the vitis, a staff made from a vine branch. This distinctive object represented the centurion's responsibility for maintaining discipline and could be used to administer punishment.

ROM195 – Roman Centurion with Vine Stick by Thomas Gunn depicts a Roman centurion standing in a relaxed pose, leaning upon his distinctive vine staff.

Rather than portraying the centurion in the midst of battle, this figure captures an everyday moment within Roman military life.

An excellent addition to a Roman legion encampment, this miniature is particularly suitable for scenes depicting soldiers undergoing inspection, receiving orders or carrying out daily duties.
