ROMCAV-08B – Roman Auxiliary Cavalry, Green Shield | John Jenkins Designs

Roman military power rested upon a highly organised army capable of operating across enormous distances and confronting a wide variety of opponents.

Although the legions were the most recognisable element of this force, auxiliary cavalry played an essential role in supporting military operations.

These mounted soldiers were employed as scouts, patrolmen, escorts and skirmishers. Their speed allowed them to investigate enemy movements, guard the approaches to Roman positions and pursue retreating troops.

Cavalrymen were generally recruited from peoples with established traditions of horsemanship. Their equipment included lightweight shields, mail armour and weapons suited to mounted fighting, such as javelins and long swords.

ROMCAV-08B – Roman Auxiliary Cavalry by John Jenkins Designs depicts one of these important mounted soldiers carrying a green shield.

Part of the Armies and Enemies of Ancient Rome collection, this figure can be combined with other Roman auxiliary cavalrymen to recreate mounted formations, frontier patrols or battlefield engagements.
