ROMCAV-09A – Roman Auxiliary Cavalry, Red Shield | John Jenkins Designs

As the Roman Empire expanded across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, its military commanders increasingly relied upon specialist auxiliary troops recruited from the populations under Roman control.

Mounted cavalrymen were particularly valuable, providing a level of mobility that could not be achieved by the heavily equipped Roman legionaries.

Their duties included patrolling frontier regions, protecting communications, scouting enemy movements and pursuing opposing forces following a battle. During engagements, cavalry could also attack vulnerable flanks and protect the infantry from enemy horsemen.

Auxiliary cavalry were commonly equipped with mail armour, swords, spears and javelins. Their shields were designed to offer protection while remaining light enough for mounted combat.

ROMCAV-09A – Roman Auxiliary Cavalry by John Jenkins Designs depicts a mounted cavalryman carrying a red shield.

Part of the Roman Auxiliary Cavalry series within Armies and Enemies of Ancient Rome, this figure is a versatile addition to historical displays depicting the mounted troops of the Roman Empire.
