ROMCAV-11A – Roman Auxiliary Cavalry, Red Shield | John Jenkins Designs
Throughout the Roman Empire, auxiliary cavalry provided the mobility and flexibility needed to support the formidable Roman legions.
These mounted soldiers were recruited from the many provinces and territories controlled by Rome, particularly from peoples with strong traditions of horsemanship. Their responsibilities included reconnaissance, frontier patrols, skirmishing and pursuing enemy forces after a battle.
Following the military reforms of Augustus, auxiliary units became increasingly professional. Mounted troops commonly wore mail armour and carried weapons including spears, javelins and the spatha, a long sword particularly suited to cavalry combat.
ROMCAV-11A – Roman Auxiliary Cavalry by John Jenkins Designs depicts a mounted cavalryman carrying a red shield and two spears, with one raised ready to strike.
The figure illustrates the role of Roman auxiliary horsemen as versatile battlefield troops capable of engaging enemies at close quarters or attacking from a distance.
Part of the Armies and Enemies of Ancient Rome collection, this figure makes an excellent addition to Roman cavalry formations and historical battle dioramas.
