ROMCAV-11B – Roman Auxiliary Cavalry, Green Shield | John Jenkins Designs
Beyond the ranks of Rome's famous legionaries stood an extensive auxiliary army recruited from the many peoples under Roman rule.
Auxiliary cavalry played a particularly important role in military operations, providing the speed and flexibility that heavy infantry could not match. Their duties included scouting enemy positions, guarding supply routes, patrolling frontiers and protecting Roman formations during battle.
Cavalry units were commonly organised into alae, which were divided into turmae under the command of decurions. Their equipment was suited to mounted warfare and could include mail armour, spears, javelins and long swords.
The use of auxiliary forces allowed Roman commanders to combine the discipline of their legionaries with the specialised skills of troops recruited from across the Empire.
ROMCAV-11B – Roman Auxiliary Cavalry by John Jenkins Designs depicts a mounted auxiliary horseman carrying a green shield.
Part of the Roman Auxiliary Cavalry series, this figure is a natural addition to any display featuring the military forces of ancient Rome.
