ROMCAV-12B – Roman Auxiliary Cavalry, Green Shield | John Jenkins Designs

The auxiliary cavalry of ancient Rome formed an essential part of the military machine that defended and expanded the Empire.

Roman commanders depended upon mounted troops for scouting, patrolling, protecting communications and screening the movements of the legions. Cavalry also played an important role in pursuing defeated enemies, preventing opposing armies from withdrawing in good order.

Auxiliary cavalrymen were recruited from a wide range of peoples across the Roman world. Following the reforms of Augustus, they served in increasingly professional units, with long terms of military service and the prospect of citizenship upon successful completion.

Their equipment could include mail armour, the spatha long sword, spears and javelins, while lightweight shields provided protection during mounted combat.

ROMCAV-12B – Roman Auxiliary Cavalry by John Jenkins Designs depicts a mounted auxiliary cavalryman carrying a green shield.

This figure belongs to the Armies and Enemies of Ancient Rome collection and is designed to complement the other Roman auxiliary horsemen, allowing collectors to build larger and more varied cavalry formations.
