ROMCAV-16A – Roman Auxiliary Cavalry, Red Shield | John Jenkins Designs
The expansion and defence of the Roman Empire depended upon more than its famous legions. Auxiliary troops, recruited from across Rome's territories, provided specialist military capabilities that supplemented the heavy infantry.
Among the most important were mounted cavalry units, known as alae. These formations were employed for scouting, frontier patrols, escort duties and rapid attacks against enemy forces.
Roman auxiliary cavalry were typically equipped with mail armour, swords, spears and javelins. Their shields were generally lighter than those carried by legionaries, allowing greater freedom of movement while mounted.
Auxiliary service also offered opportunities for advancement and, after lengthy military service, the possibility of Roman citizenship.
ROMCAV-16A – Roman Auxiliary Cavalry by John Jenkins Designs depicts a mounted auxiliary cavalryman carrying a red shield.
This figure belongs to the Roman Auxiliary Cavalry series within Armies and Enemies of Ancient Rome and is ideal for recreating cavalry formations, mounted patrols or clashes along the frontiers of the Roman Empire.
