ROMCAV-16B – Roman Auxiliary Cavalry, Green Shield | John Jenkins Designs
Although the Roman legions were famous for their disciplined heavy infantry, mounted troops played an important supporting role throughout the Roman Empire's military campaigns.
Roman auxiliary cavalry were recruited largely from peoples within the provinces and territories under Roman influence. Their responsibilities included reconnaissance, patrolling, screening advancing armies, protecting the flanks of infantry formations and pursuing retreating enemies.
Following the military reforms of Augustus, auxiliary units became increasingly organised and trained to standards comparable with those of the legions. Many auxiliary soldiers served for 25 years, after which they could receive Roman citizenship.
Mounted troops commonly wore mail armour and carried weapons including javelins, lances and the spatha, a longer sword suited to cavalry combat.
ROMCAV-16B – Roman Auxiliary Cavalry by John Jenkins Designs depicts a mounted auxiliary cavalryman with a green shield, carrying two spears, one raised ready to throw.
Part of the Armies and Enemies of Ancient Rome collection, this figure brings the mobility and striking power of Rome's mounted forces to an ancient battlefield diorama.
