RR-01BW – Centurion | John Jenkins Designs
The centurion was one of the most important officers in the Roman army, responsible for maintaining discipline, training soldiers and leading his men into battle.
During the late Roman Republic, the cohort increasingly replaced the older maniple as the principal tactical formation of the legion. Each cohort was divided into centuries commanded by centurions, who formed the backbone of the Roman military command structure.
Centurions were experienced soldiers whose authority was essential to the effectiveness of the legion. They were expected to lead by example, enforce military discipline and maintain order during the confusion of combat.
A centurion could often be distinguished from ordinary legionaries by his equipment. His helmet crest was commonly worn crosswise, while his sword and dagger were carried on opposite sides to those of an ordinary soldier.
The centurion was supported by several important members of his century, including an optio, a signifer and a cornicen.
RR-01BW – Centurion by John Jenkins Designs depicts one of these respected Roman officers carrying a white shield.
Part of The Roman Army of the Late Republic series, this figure is an essential addition to any Roman legionary formation or historical battle display.
