RR-02BW – Signifer | John Jenkins Designs
The Roman army of the late Republic was renowned for its organisation, discipline and clearly defined military hierarchy.
Among the most important soldiers within each century was the signifer, the standard bearer responsible for carrying the unit's signum into battle.
The signum was a military emblem mounted upon a pole and could feature decorative discs, wreaths and other symbols identifying the unit. It served as a vital rallying point for legionaries during the confusion of battle.
The position of signifer carried considerable responsibility and danger. The standard bearer was expected to remain visible to the soldiers, often close to the front of the formation, where he could become a particular target for the enemy.
In addition to his battlefield duties, the signifer was responsible for aspects of the century's financial administration, including safeguarding the soldiers' funds. He received double the basic pay of an ordinary legionary.
RR-02BW – Signifer by John Jenkins Designs depicts a Roman standard bearer carrying a white shield.
Part of The Roman Army of the Late Republic series, this figure is an important addition to any Roman legionary formation.
