RR-16W – Republican Roman Legionnaire | John Jenkins Designs

During the final century of the Roman Republic, the Roman army underwent important changes that helped transform it into a highly organised and professional military force.

The traditional manipular formations increasingly gave way to the cohort as the principal tactical unit of the legion. Each cohort contained several centuries of soldiers commanded by centurions, allowing the army to operate with greater flexibility during military campaigns.

Roman legionaries formed the backbone of this military system. Their equipment generally included protective armour, a helmet, the scutum shield, a short sword known as the gladius and the pilum, a heavy throwing javelin.

Their greatest strength lay in disciplined formations, rigorous training and the ability to maintain order during even the most difficult engagements.

RR-16W – Republican Roman Legionnaire by John Jenkins Designs depicts a soldier of the late Roman Republic carrying a white shield.

Part of The Roman Army of the Late Republic series, this figure is ideal for building larger formations of legionaries or recreating the military campaigns of this turbulent period in Roman history.
