RR-18W – Cornicen | John Jenkins Designs

During the final century of the Roman Republic, the Roman army developed into one of the most disciplined and organised fighting forces of the ancient world.

A vital part of this organisation was the use of military musicians to communicate orders across the battlefield. Among these specialists was the cornicen, a soldier responsible for sounding signals using a large curved brass horn known as the cornu.

The cornicen accompanied the century's officers and standard bearer, helping relay commands during marches, military ceremonies and engagements.

These signals were particularly important during battle, when the noise and confusion of combat made spoken commands difficult to hear.

The cornicen was a respected member of the unit and received double the basic pay of an ordinary legionary.

RR-18W – Cornicen by John Jenkins Designs depicts one of these important Roman military musicians, wearing a red tunic.

Part of The Roman Army of the Late Republic series, this figure makes an excellent companion to centurions, signiferi and legionaries, bringing authenticity and detail to Roman military formations.
