The Raid on St. Francis remains one of the most daring and controversial operations of the French and Indian War. In the autumn of 1759, Major Robert Rogers led approximately 200 Rangers deep into enemy-controlled territory with orders to strike the Abenaki village of Saint-François-de-la-Rivière-du-Sud (Odanak), which British authorities believed had long served as a base for raids against frontier settlements in New England. Travelling hundreds of miles through dense forests, rivers and swamps, the Rangers relied entirely upon their skill, endurance and ability to survive in one of North America's harshest wilderness environments.

After successfully carrying out the raid, Rogers and his men faced an even greater challenge. Cut off from supplies and pursued by French forces and Native warriors, they endured a desperate retreat through unforgiving wilderness. Hunger, exhaustion and exposure claimed many lives, making the return journey one of the most remarkable survival stories in military history. The raid cemented Roger's Rangers' reputation as one of the most effective irregular fighting forces of the eighteenth century, and their tactics would later influence generations of military light infantry.
