RRBSC-01B - S. Carolina Officer | John Jenkins Designs
This South Carolina Provincial Officer represents a member of the colonial military forces raised during the French and Indian War.
The figure forms part of the South Carolina Provincial Regiment collection, providing a command figure to accompany the regiment's marching and at-attention infantry.
The South Carolina Provincial Regiment was established by an act of the colonial Assembly on 6 July 1757.
The original plan called for seven companies of 100 men each, with the regiment placed under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel Probart Howarth, a veteran of General Braddock's campaign.
Each company was intended to include a captain, two lieutenants and an ensign, supported by non-commissioned officers and drummers.
The regiment became known as the Buffs because of the distinctive facing colour of its uniforms.
Recruitment proved difficult, and by the middle of 1758 the regiment contained approximately 550 privates, fewer than originally intended.
This individual officer provides an excellent addition to a South Carolina Provincial formation, particularly when displayed alongside the regiment's infantry and drummers to recreate a more complete military unit.
