RRCAMP-03A – Roman Tent | John Jenkins Designs

The Roman army was renowned not only for its battlefield discipline but also for its extraordinary organisation and engineering abilities. One of the greatest examples of this was the Roman marching camp, constructed to protect soldiers whenever the army halted during a military campaign.

At the end of each day's march, legionaries were assigned the task of creating a defensible encampment. This usually involved digging a perimeter ditch, building an earthen rampart and erecting a protective palisade. The work could occupy several hours, even after a long and exhausting march.

The Greek historian Polybius described the organisation of Republican Roman camps, which generally followed a carefully planned layout, adapted to the terrain and the number of troops requiring accommodation.

Within these fortified camps, tents provided the soldiers with shelter and living quarters. The Roman marching camp was an essential part of the legion's ability to operate far from permanent military bases.

RRCAMP-03A – Roman Tent by John Jenkins Designs recreates one of these important camp structures. With an approximate base measurement of 5½ x 4¾ inches and a height of 2¼ inches, it is designed to complement Roman encampment and military dioramas.
